'God vs. gays' never was the case

by Cheri Meyers

Columbus SpeakOut, an ally advocacy organization, is pleased to welcome special guest speaker Tony Marconi, a straight ally involved with the Delaware Gay-Straight Christian Alliance and board member of Equality Ohio.

Speak Out

Marconi will be presenting, "God vs. Gays: The War That Never Was," an alternative perspective on homosexuality and the Bible. In addition to discussing the different ways we

interpret the Scripture, the presentation will also address the story of Sodom; the Holiness Code of Leviticus; Paul's letter to the Romans; 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy.

Speakout will resume their monthly meetings beginning on Saturday, September 27 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Center on High, 1160 North High Street in Columbus. Marconi's presentation will mark the return to regular meetings for SpeakOut.

Many allies of the LGBT community are unsure how to handle confrontation which centers on biblical text. Marconi's presentation will address this concern and allow ample opportunity for allies to ask specific questions. Immediately following the presentation and discussion, SpeakOut will offer a free viewing of

Kim Clark and Luane Beck's 2006 documentary, God & Gays: Bridging the Gap. The film looks through the eyes and experiences of people wanting a relationship with the very religion that rejects them. It is a content-driven open and honest reflection of what it's like to be gay and religious in America.

This presentation is free and open to all allies and the LGBT community who are interested in learning more about this topic. Light refreshments will be served. Free parking is available. For more information on SpeakOut, e-mail SpeakOut_cols@yahoo.com or go to www.SpeakOutCols.org.

Cheri Meyers is the founder and director of Speak Out.
